Collagen hot chocolate: the perfect hug in a mug!

This recipe uses cacao instead of chocolate to make a delicious and nourishing drink. Perfect for those drizzly and cold winter days! Conventional hot chocolate is often full of sugar, other additives and lacks nutrients. If you’re looking for something more supportive to your health, then look no further! This recipe is a great alternative – rich in nutrients and no compromises on flavour. It also uses Pure Fish Collagen for some extra goodness.

What is cacao?

Chocolate is made from cacao beans. Cacao products are less processed and higher in nutrients than chocolate typically found on supermarket shelves. Chocolate is often mixed with other ingredients like sugar and milk. By adding these extra ingredients, the amount of cacao in the finished product is reduced. This recipe uses 100% pure cacao powder, to optimise the nutrient content.

Cacao is an excellent source of various nutrients including:1https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cacao-vs-cocoa#nutrition2https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cocoa-powder-nutrition-benefits#TOC_TITLE_HDR_2

  • Magnesium
  • Selenium
  • Chromium
  • Iron
  • Tryptophan
  • Polyphenols

These nutrients make cacao a great addition to the diet! Unprocessed cacao can be very bitter, but this recipe adds some natural sweetness to make a tasty but nutritious drink. You can simply adjust the amount of sweetness you use to suit you.

Why add Collagen, I hear you ask?

Pure Fish Collagen plays a key role in our Gut Health Protocol. It supports the health of the intestinal lining as well as supporting the health of bones, joints, skin, hair, and nails. Ageing negatively affects both the quality and quantity of collagen produced,3https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/articles/23089-collagen highlighting the importance of consuming more collagen as you age. Collagen can be found in certain animal-based foods, such as bones and animal skin. However, supplements are an easy and convenient way to boost collagen intake. Now, I know what you are thinking, a fish product in a hot drink, surely not! Please don’t be alarmed, our Pure Fish Collagen is completely tasteless.

Collagen Hot Chocolate recipe

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 200ml of milk (I use Jersey milk but you can use any milk you like)
  • 1 TBSP of cacao powder
  • A pinch of cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 TSP honey (optional)
  • 1 TBSP Pure Fish Collagen

Method:

  1. Add the cacao, collagen and cinnamon into your favourite mug.
  2. Add a splash of boiling water into your mug and stir well.
  3. Heat your milk in a saucepan or using a steam wand on a coffee machine.
  4. Once the milk is heated, pour this into your mug and stir.
  5. Sit down and enjoy!

Top tip: If you are heating your milk in a saucepan, at the end, use a small electric whisk to make the milk frothy.
